When facing fire or water damage, misinformation can lead to costly mistakes and delays in recovery. As a homeowner in California, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction to ensure you make informed decisions during a stressful time. At West Coast Fire and Water, we aim to clarify common myths about restoration services, empowering you with the knowledge you need to protect your home and loved ones.

Understanding Restoration Myths

Here are some prevalent myths surrounding fire and water damage restoration, along with the facts you should know:

Myth 1: I Can Handle Minor Damage Myself
Many homeowners believe they can manage small fire or water damage without professional help. While minor issues might seem manageable, they can quickly escalate if not addressed properly.

– Fact: Professional restoration teams have the expertise and equipment to assess and remediate damage effectively. What seems like a small problem could have hidden consequences, such as mold growth or structural issues.

Myth 2: Insurance Will Cover Everything
Some homeowners assume that their insurance will cover all costs related to fire or water damage restoration.

– Fact: Insurance policies vary widely. While many cover restoration costs, some may exclude specific incidents or have limitations. It’s vital to review your policy and understand your coverage before a disaster strikes.

Myth 3: All Restoration Companies Are the Same
Homeowners often think that any restoration company will provide the same level of service. However, the quality and expertise of restoration services can differ significantly.

– Fact: Choosing a reputable restoration company with experience in fire and water damage is essential. Look for certifications, reviews, and local expertise to ensure you receive high-quality service.

Myth 4: I Can Wait to Start the Restoration Process
Some believe that it’s okay to delay restoration after a fire or water incident, especially if the damage seems minor.

– Fact: Time is critical in restoration. Delays can lead to more extensive damage, such as mold growth or structural compromise. Prompt action is necessary to mitigate further issues and costs.

Myth 5: Restoration Is Always Expensive
Many homeowners assume that restoration services will be prohibitively expensive, leading them to hesitate in seeking help.

– Fact: While restoration can be an investment, addressing issues early can save money in the long run. Professional restoration can help prevent further damage, which can lead to significantly higher repair costs down the line.

What to Expect from Professional Restoration Services

When you choose a professional restoration team like West Coast Fire and Water, you can expect a structured, efficient approach to recovery:

Stucco has a lot of enticing traits, it’s resistant, simple to repair, and is visually appealing. Despite all this, it is not impermeable to water damage. Keep reading to find out more.

Stucco is a beautiful finishing aspect to a home, and as it’s a sturdy, durable, easy to fix material it’s a widely used material especially in our area. However, if improperly installed it can lead to sever water damage to your home.

1. Improper InsulationWhile its very durable, Stucco is also very specific in its application. If there is an open seal near a window, flashing or joint, you run the risk of getting tears. What this allows for is moisture and water to penetrate the protective layer and steep through to more porous materials causing mold, rot and mildew to grow. Sometimes these ‘tears’ are apparent and easily visible to see, other times they are easily overlooked.

2. CompositionStucco, while being a basic mix of sand, water and cement it MUST have the correct composition. If the mixture is off it will not cure correctly, and the integrity is compromised.

3. Algae GrowthThe texture of Stucco is a large aspect of its appeal; However, this also makes it algae prone. Especially if the runoff from wood, unclean gutters or other contaminants is actively in contact with it. This can cause staining of the stucco itself and should be cleaned bi-annually to ensure the continued seal of the stucco.

4. Repairing water damaged StuccoFiguring out the source of water damage is the key first step to repairing damaged stucco. Even after fixing tears or cracks, if the source is left unaddressed you could end up with worse damage than when you started.Your second course of action should be to prevent water from getting into the wall again. A drainage plane and vapor barrier should be inaugurated into the affected areas.

Where there is damaged, cracked, deteriorated or even completely missing stucco a patching compound should be applied. And be sure to reach out to a professional about the best products to use to ensure that your repair is steadfast.

Safety this summer is not just limited to using sunscreen and fire safety. What about Santa Rosa brownouts?

You may get the terms blackout and brownout confused or believe the terms to be interchangeable. During a brownout, the level of voltage provided by your power company is significantly reduced to accommodate the wide level of use. This sort of disruption in service typically happens during the summer when air conditioning units are used more frequently and for longer periods. It also can occur during severe weather conditions. A blackout is when voltage is completely gone until it is restored. Having a little bit of power during a brownout may seem like the better solution. Is this actually true?

Here’s a scary statistic: the United States’ largest blackout occurred in the dog days of August in 2003 and affected an estimated 50 million people in Canada, Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

The downsides to a brownout include potentially damaging your appliances. Electrical products can malfunction when power is flickering back and forth, causing permanent damage and potentially a fire hazard. Certain devices, such as televisions and computers, cannot handle the shift of power or regulate the amount of power they receive.

How can you prepare for a brownout or blackout this summer?

You never know when you’re going to need to leave during a disaster. No matter the time of year, keeping your gas tank at half capacity at all times is highly recommended. Power failures can also happen during thunderstorms and winter blizzard conditions. Being on the road during these events is very life threatening. Only use travel as a last resort.

Stock up your pantry on water, flashlights, batteries and non-perishable foods, as well as methods to cook that don’t use electricity, so you can keep your family fed. Disposable utensils and dinnerware may be helpful, so you don’t need to use water to wash dishes. If you use a well powered by electricity, this tip will be extremely helpful.

What should you do during a brownout?

During a brownout, turn off all electronic devices and appliances including washing machines, dishwashers, microwaves, dryers and ovens. Reducing your power consumption as much as possible will reduce the demand for power, thus shortening the length of the brownout. It’s also possible the brownout can turn into a blackout due to others using power so prepare for either event.

Use flashlights instead of candles to avoid fire damage.

Install power strips to protect your devices when power is restored. A whole-home surge protector will also protect your entire home from a power surge after a brownout. There may be times when you’re not near your home during a brownout so this solution is one you can do today; “future” you will be grateful you did!

Keep your fridge and freezer closed as often as possible to prevent food from thawing too quickly.

Keep one light turned to the “on” position so you know when power is restored.

Once your power is restored, immediately dispose of unsafe food and assess your home for any damages.

Having all this information ahead of time will protect you, your home and belongings this summer. Get prepared today!

Wildfire safety protocols have been executed way before fire season so Northern California communities can remain proactive and potentially avoid massive wildfire damage. One of the most important things you can do as a homeowner is to remove and reduce vegetation on your properties – trees, brush, leaves, branches, pine needles, etc – so fire does not have as much fuel to continue burning.

However, with vegetation clearing comes some risk. Making yourself aware of potential hazards as you begin cleaning up your property will ensure your personal safety as well as the safety of your home. There’s nothing worse than trying to accomplish a huge task and then being forced to stay inside due to an injury.

Before you even think of going outside to perform vegetation cleanup, make sure you are wearing sunscreen, long clothing, a hat and protective shoes. Bring gloves and protective eyewear with you as well to protect your hands and face.

What are some potential hazards and risks to keep in mind?

Using Power Tools Potential electric shock or burning can occur if tools such as chainsaws, lawnmowers, hedgetrimmers, weed wackers and any heavy equipment are used. Rocks can be struck and cause a spark or head injury. If any of these pieces of equipment are not used under complete control, accidental dismemberment can happen. Do not allow children around any use of power tools.

Cleanup Near Bodies of Water Make sure someone else is with you at all times while performing cleanup outside on your property, especially around bodies of water. Depending on the saturation of the ground, you may slip or sink and hurt yourself. If you slip and fall into a pond, lake or creek, you may not be able to call for help and drowning may occur.

Trees and Branches

Watch your step as you remove fallen branches. They may be covering very sharp protruding twigs or smaller branches. Anticipate they may be heavy; consider cutting them into logs you can transport to make the task easier. If you are removing branches from a tree, make sure no one is on the path of the falling branch and you have an accurate trajectory.

Vegetation on the Ground Fires spread incredibly fast when there’s a consistent stream of dried vegetation on the ground. While clearing brush is very helpful, be aware of plants that have thorns or stickers and avoid poison oak and any other harmful vegetation. Plants and brush can really irritate your skin; you should always wear long pants or overalls while working in a heavily forested area. Check for ant hills, hornet or yellow jacket nests, etc. Bugs, ticks and spiders will also be present so avoid them and routinely check your clothing.

Removing or Lifting Fallen or Felled Trees

Because of the abnormal amount of snow Northern California had experienced in January 2021, many trees have fallen to the ground or partially uprooted which makes them even more difficult and dangerous to remove. If you are not experienced and don’t have the tools or assistance, it’s never a good idea to try to fall a tree yourself. This task is the most dangerous as trees are heavy and improper communication or technique may result in a tree falling onto your house. Tree falling can all of a sudden change trajectory or a person may become crushed by a tree. Contact a professional tree removal service that has the knowledge and experience with properly cutting down trees.

Knowing all these potential hazards and risks should not prevent you from performing or scheduling cleanup on your property. Having this information ahead of the large task of vegetation removal will keep you ahead of the game and give you confidence in creating a safer environment for you and your family.

The summer season has commenced, which means the likelihood of experiencing a power outage due to overloaded electrical equipment (everyone is using their air conditioner and fans these days) or a Public Safety Power Shutoff event is increased. PG&E has organized PSPS events in the past during a wildfire event or strong winds to prevent future spread of damage.

How is a potential PSPS event determined?

PG&E regularly reviews a combination of factors to determine if power should be shut off in your area, including:

High winds

Low humidity

High temperatures

Condition of dry material on the ground and vegetation near lines. General conditions and observations of spacing between trees, whether trees falling could damage power lines and electrical equipment, etc.

A presence of one of these factors does not necessarily mean a PSPS event could occur. However, according to PG&E’s website, “Although you may not live or work in a high fire-threat area or an area experiencing high winds, your power may be shut off if your community relies on a line that runs through an area that is experiencing extreme weather.”

How Can I Prepare For a PSPS event? Stock up on shelf stable foods (such as pasta and canned foods), pet and baby food, as well as medicine and other necessities. Fill your gas tank, charge any medical devices and have flashlights on hand. PG&E recommends turning off and unplugging electrical appliances (computer, TV’s, water heaters as well) that may spark or surge once power is restored.

Some households have access to a generator. Be sure you are educated on how to properly use a generator, and never use it inside your home. These gas-powered engines, dependent on their wattage, are very helpful for running your lights, refrigerator, freezer and keeping your cell phones charged. However, if you do not have one, you can prevent food spoiling with coolers and lots of ice. As long as a fridge is kept closed, food can last for up to 4 hours. Freezer food can last up to 48 hours. Charge your phones and purchase backup rechargeable chargers for your devices. Use camping equipment such as a charcoal grill or camp stove for cooking.

Dealing With The Aftermath

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding your power being shut off, it can cause some issues for your and your family. We have dealt with cleanup of refrigerators after a power shutoff in Mendocino County; the aftermath smell can be very hard to remove not only from your appliances, but your entire home as well! Odors are just as troublesome as an infestation. However, there are methods you can use to get rid of the smell. Vinegar, baking soda or activated charcoal on trays or in cups in a running refrigerator may absorb the smell. Bleach is never recommended, as it is harmful when ingested and should not be near where food is stored.

Did you know you can file an insurance claim to help with the financial burden of replacing your food due to a power outage? Some insurance companies cover this loss if the utility company is at fault, even for a planned power outage. Just like in water and fire damage situations, food becomes spoiled and replacement is included in your claim, which means more money to get your life back on track and food in your fridge. However, homeowners insurance doesn’t cover maintenance issues so if your fridge stops working or you go away for the weekend and discover all the food has gone bad, it becomes your responsibility to replace.

West Coast Fire & Water has had the unique opportunity to help families who have had rotten food removed from their home. Just like we advertise, we are here to help during any type of disaster situation because we care about you and your family’s well-being!

If you’ve lived in the Sonoma County area for more than a few years, you may have noticed the dried up rivers and cracking land masses. Despite the large amount of rain Sonoma County received in 2021, the area has had too much of a deficit of rainfall over the last two years.

Holding onto as much of this valuable resource as possible is critical for not only our residents, but our livestock and crops as well. Our soil is trying to catch up and hold onto reserves all at once. Ultimately, we will not be able to produce as much sustenance or physically support the needs of our community unless we work together to conserve water. A long drought in extreme temperatures also increases the chance of a wildfire.

Combining the lack of rainfall over an extended period of time and heat waves multiplies the impact a drought will have on our community, and reduces the resources to combat it. The beginning and end of a dry weather period are unpredictable so taking steps now to protect this precious, lacking resource is necessary to prepare for the worst possible scenario.

What are some things you can do to conserve water TODAY?

Try adopting a lawn-free landscape. Although this method is incredibly helpful with reducing the amount of water used for land beautification, make sure you properly remove any dead, dry vegetation as needed.

Only run your dishwasher and/or clothes washer when they are full.

Don’t let water run while shaving, lathering your hands with soap, brushing teeth or rinsing dishes. Use less water with each of these activities.

Check toilets and faucets for leaks and repair as needed.

Water your outside plants early in the morning to prevent loss from wind and evaporation

Use a broom to clean your driveway, as opposed to a water hose.

Wash your car minimally with a bucket of soapy water and an automatic shutoff nozzle.

Using these tips, you can be proud of the work you are doing to conserve water during the current drought Sonoma County is experiencing! Having water available to handle daily tasks, as well as a potential wildfire, will keep our community strong.

Regular burning of vegetation on your property is, ironically, a wonderful way to prevent wildfires. This kind of maintenance is typically completed in the springtime. It may sound intimidating to conduct your own burn pile. However, safely ridding of vegetation in this manner is very helpful for fire resistance on your property. Here are some guidelines to follow so you can burn in a safe manner.

How to Conduct a Burn Pile

First, contact your local fire department to obtain a burn permit. They will provide you with additional safety information so you can burn effectively. Typically, when weather is generally too hot and land is dry, a burn ban will be put in place for the season. You will also be instructed to check in with a specific location on whether a designated day is a “burn day.” Days that are windy and dry are not permissible burn days. Piles may not be larger than 4’ in diameter and you must place your burn pile at least 10’ (starting from the outside of your pile) away from any other flammable materials. Typically, only one burn pile may operate at a time. Make sure to have a long hose and shovel available; keeping the outside area of the burn pile wet can prevent a burn pile from escalating out of control.

What To Burn

Acceptable burn items include dry vegetation such as branches, leaves and logs. Not accepted burn items include household trash and chemicals. Lately up and down California, clearing of trees is being conducted in heavily wooded neighborhoods and around power lines to reduce the risk of a wildfire. Maintaining a clearance of 100’ around your property is recommended, if possible, so your property can be more fire resistant.

No disaster stands in our way of providing services to an entire community, not even wildfires. Up and down California, we have dealt with some of the most disastrous wildfires in our state’s history, including Tubbs, Mendocino Complex, Camp, Woolsey and many others. Our neighbors have been drastically affected, as well as our families and homes. We have learned while standing together, we remain the strongest! Our teams have developed special training in response to cleanup due to California wildfires.

We are currently experiencing a massive amount of rain, which will hopefully delay and prevent wildfires from occurring so frequently. However, being prepared for the future can keep you on alert to help protect your community. There are things you can do on a daily basis to prevent wildfires. Here are some ways you can prevent wildfires from spreading:

Always check the weather conditions before using open flame outdoors or any heavy equipment. On a dry and windy day, all that’s needed to start a wildfire is a strike on a rock that’s in your lawn mower’s way and a gust of wind.

Avoid parking or driving your vehicle on dry grass.

Regularly maintain your gas and battery-operated outside equipment, including your vehicle.

Keep a fire extinguisher in your vehicle at all times. You never know when you may need to put out a fire while traveling on the highway, or a vehicle may suddenly catch fire in your area.

If you are in need of smoke and fire damage cleanup due to any type of fire, West Coast Fire & Water is here to help you get back to life as quickly as possible!

Your home is one of your biggest, proudest assets. Having homeowners insurance in Sacramento can give you peace of mind that your home is protected from loss due to events such as water damage, smoke or fire damage, and mold damage. However, simply having a homeowners insurance policy does not guarantee coverage. West Coast Fire & Water has extensive knowledge regarding what most insurance policies cover, such as:

Water damage

Most homeowners policies cover water damage to your floors, walls and roof. if the loss is sudden or accidental. Some common ways water damage occurs include broken water pipes, malfunctioning dishwasher or water heater. However, homeowners insurance does not cover damage due to poor maintenance or neglect, and it does not pay for an appliance replacement.

Mold damage

Mold damage is usually covered when caused by a covered water damage event. Ongoing lack of maintenance such as poor ventilation and improperly sealed doors or windows are not covered. Many insurance companies have a cap on how much mold coverage they will provide.

Fire damage

Fire damage coverage is typically built into your policy and covers accidental fires, such as an electrical or cooking mishap and wildfires. Due to the need for possible extensive repairs and safe living conditions, homeowners insurance also often covers living expenses while your home is being repaired and rebuilt.

Damage or theft to personal property

Your personal property in your home is also typically covered when applicable. A good rule of thumb is to catalog or at least take photos of your expensive pieces of personal property, such as artwork, electronics and furniture. This documentation can be very helpful for your insurance company and speed along the claims process. Our cleanup and restoration services help minimize the cost of replacing your belongings because we strive to restore them as much as possible.

Disaster cleanup can be costly, so act fast when you have water, mold or fire damage! Call your insurance company to file, then call West Coast Fire & Water for emergency services.
