Challenge
A fire originating from an exhaust fan ignited in the bathroom of a two-story building belonging to the city of Ukiah. The incident required immediate attention to mitigate damage and facilitate the recovery process. The response involved coordinating with the fire department, managing insurance claims, and ensuring that the building was prepared for reconstruction while addressing the needs of the contents affected by the fire.
Proposed Solution
West Coast Fire & Water was called out on the same day as the fire to implement a comprehensive recovery plan. The following steps were taken:
1. Emergency Board-Up
The team quickly boarded up the doors that the fire department had breached to access the fire, securing the building and preventing further damage.
2. Insurance Liaison
The team worked closely with the insurance company, meeting multiple times to agree on the estimate and formulate a detailed scope of work, ensuring that all aspects of the recovery were covered.
3. Asbestos Testing
Prior to any demolition or cleaning, asbestos testing was conducted to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
4. Content Management
A thorough evaluation of all contents was undertaken, including packing and moving items for cleaning. Electronics were sent to a specialized subcontractor for cleaning, while other items were cleaned in-house to ensure quality control.

5. Onsite Cleaning and Waste Management
Much of the content cleaning was performed onsite, with dumpsters brought in to dispose of unsalvageable contents efficiently. The team set up portable toilets, as there was no running water available during the initial recovery phase.
6. Efficient Logistics
To streamline the process, a forklift was utilized for moving pallet racks, which was more cost-effective than manual handling. Scissor lifts were also employed for drywall remediation and to reach high ceilings, facilitating effective repairs.
7. Preparation for Reconstruction
Once the cleaning and evaluation were complete, the building was made ready for handover to the reconstruction team, ensuring that the site was safe and organized for the next phase.
Results
West Coast Fire & Water’s rapid and organized response ensured that the fire damage was addressed efficiently, minimizing the disruption to the building’s occupants. The successful management of the insurance process, content cleaning, and logistics allowed for a smooth transition to the reconstruction phase.
By effectively coordinating with the insurance company and employing a systematic approach to recovery, West Coast Fire & Water played a vital role in restoring the property and preparing it for future use.
