3 Common Causes of Home House Fires and How to Prevent Them

As much as we love performing complete fire restoration in Marin County and bringing a home back to pristine condition after it has been damaged by fire, it would, of course, be better if the fire had never happened to begin with! To help you prevent a damaging conflagration, we present the three most common causes of house fires and how to stop them.

1. Cooking Equipment

Overheating pots and pans, food catching fire… it happens all too easily. The best way to avoid this common occurrence is to never leave cooking equipment unattended. Stay in the room and keep a close watch on your cooking.

2. Heating

Furnaces, provided they are well serviced and checked on a regular basis, are the least risky forms of heating. Just make sure they are properly maintained. Portable heaters are the worst culprits, however. If you must use them, make sure they are kept well away from furniture, curtains, and clothing.

3. Electrical Equipment

Aside from heaters, other electrical equipment can easily start a fire, especially if it is old or not properly maintained. Faulty or frayed power cords, or overloaded power points, can all cause fires. Check all your cords and bind them carefully with insulation tape. Rather, buy new appliances when your old ones become risky to use. And, be sure that you are not overloading your sockets.

Should any of these prevention measures fail, West Coast Fire & Water is on standby to provide fire restoration services.
